The NFL System is Broken

If you live in the United States, or are a fan of professional football (the American sort) then you know about the impending labor battle. It’s impossible to ignore if you watch some of the 24 hour news stations or read the morning sports page. The labor agreement has huge implications on the future and the quality of the game that so many people love.

If you have only heard about the labor agreement on the periphery then it might all seem confusing. The labor agreement comes down to one thing: money. The NFLPA and the owners are at a discord about the amount of money being passed around. Here are a few key points that this case comes down to.

Rookie Wage Scale

It appears that both sides agree with this concept – rookies make too much money. Both sides would like to see a cap on that money; the NBA has a great salary cap for rookies. Nonetheless, the issue is what to do with that leftover money. The owners would like to keep the money, stating that they are losing money on the books. The players want to see the leftover money go to veterans and medical benefits for retirees.

18 Game Season

This one is shrouded in injury protection and the integrity of the game, but it’s all about money. Players claim an 18 game schedule is too tough on the body and would like to be further compensated. The NFL is claiming that it’s not any more games than they play now and therefore should require no additional compensation.

All the issues surrounding the new collective bargaining agreement are about money. With both sides seemingly deadlocked it could be quite a while before football fans see their favorite game again.  Maybe fans could use that time to make money in a down economy by blogging and writing affiliate program reviews.
