Tips For First-Time Home Buyers

Buying a house, especially in this turbulent market, can be overwhelming. For first-time buyers especially, it is exciting but also a little scary. There is so much to consider and so many important decisions to make along the way to your first home. First-time buyers should definitely use a realtor since a professional realtor can provide much-needed advice and help ensure first-time buyers find the home of their dreams. They can often also recommend mortgage brokers, inspectors, title companies and the many other professional services required when buying a home.

It’s a good idea to get pre-approved before beginning to search for homes. This will provide buyers with the price range and budget they can afford and will also be valuable once offers are submitted to sellers. When choosing a home mortgage, do a lot of research and be certain to stay within a set budget. Though there are options that may be less expensive in the short run, the traditional 30-year-fixed home mortgage is often the best choice financially.

When looking at homes, decide what features are most important and what features may be open to compromise. Look at neighborhoods and school districts to narrow down the search area. When it’s time to make an offer, it’s a good idea to ask for a contingency for a home inspection. This will bring to light any potential issues or repairs with the home, and sometimes repair costs can be negotiated with the home sellers.

Once the appraisal is complete, the sale will close and the title will transfer from seller to buyer. Many areas require that the documents be filed with a city or county assessors office before buyers can take possession. Once that takes place, the celebration – and the moving – can begin!
